Portland offers almost as many places to grab a cup of coffee as there are streets in the city. It can be difficult to pick which one to try when you’re crunched for time or just looking for a quick pick! Here we’ll list our favorites (and why) as long as some other ones.
Top Picks:
Little Woodfords 316 A Congress Street
Little Woodfords is the cutest pink and white shop on the block. They offer a wide variety of coffee and espresso choices as well as a limited selection of breakfast sandwiches, scones and croissants. My favorite: their specialty Astro drinks *dependent on the astrological month, obi*.
Speckled Axe
18 Thames Street and 567 Congress Street
The Speckled Axe offers their own wood roasted coffee, coming in iced coffee, espresso and more. Check out their cool locations on the waterfront or up in town on Congress Street.
CIA Cafe (Coffee, Ice Cream and Art)
72 Ocean Street, South Portland or 9 Beach Street, Saco
CIA boasts their sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, ice cream and coffee but not to forget that they also have some great baked goods in their cases. While you’re in there check out the local artists that they feature and their Maine made gifts for sale.
Coffee by Design
620 Congress Street
Better known as CBD, they have multiple locations over southern Maine. They offer the full range of coffees, but their extensive selection of coffee is the bigger draw.
Some very good runner-ups:
Bard Coffee-185 Middle Street
Bard has a cute walk up window where you can pick up your order. They have the full range of coffees and some snacks to choose from.
Tandem Coffee Roasters-122 Free Street
Tandem has all varieties of coffee that you could hope for, and while you’re there you can pick up some great snacks or breakfast from their bakery section.
Arabica-2 Free Street
Arabica gives off the typical coffee shop vibes, including the great coffee.
The Proper Cup-500 Forest Ave
The Proper Cup has the good ol coffee shop vibe with premium coffee and bakery items.
Hilltop Coffee-100 Congress Street
Hilltop Coffee gives the boutique coffee shop vibe with a variety of artisan food choices.
Crooked Mile Cafe-8 Milk Street
The Crooked Mile Cafe has coffee, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, lunch sandwiches and specials and ice cream.
Yordprom Coffee Shop-722 Congress Street
Higher Grounds-45 Wharf Street
Coveside Coffee-28 Vannah Ave
Coffee ME Up-221 Cumberland Ave
There are plenty of shops I’m sure we missed in our certainly not exclusive list of shops in the area! Be sure to check out the ones we don’t have listed and let us know how you liked them so we can be sure to check them out as well!
